What Is Sect in Astrology?

Sect is an old astrological technique that divides birth charts into two basic groups:

Diurnal charts
and
Nocturnal charts

The word “sect” refers to a group, division, or team.

Day Chart vs Night Chart

The difference between a day chart and a night chart begins with the position of the Sun.

Mercury is slightly different.

Traditional astrologers often treat Mercury as adaptable. Its sect can depend on its relationship with the Sun, including whether Mercury rises before or after the Sun.

Why Birth Time Matters for Chart Sect

Birth time is one of the most important pieces of information when calculating sect.

Imagine two people born on the same date in the same city.

One person is born at 10:00 AM.

The other is born at 10:00 PM.

Their planets may occupy similar zodiac degrees because both people were born on the same day.

However, their houses and horizon positions can be completely different.

The morning birth may place the Sun above the horizon.

The nighttime birth may place the Sun below the horizon.

One person could therefore have a day chart while the other has a night chart.

This is why birth time becomes especially important when the Sun is close to sunrise or sunset.

What If You Do Not Know Your Birth Time?

Why Birth Location Matters

The horizon is local.

Sunrise and sunset do not occur at the same moment everywhere on Earth.

A person born in London and another person born in Tokyo on the same calendar date may experience very different local sky conditions.

Latitude and longitude affect calculations involving the Ascendant and houses.

How the Calculator Determines the Houses

The calculator uses the Equal House system.

In Equal Houses, the Ascendant begins the 1st house.

Every house then covers exactly 30 degrees.

Now suppose you have a night chart.

The Moon, Venus, and Mars belong to the chart’s sect.

Jupiter and Saturn are outside their preferred daytime sect.

This does not create a simple good-versus-bad system.

A planet can be out of sect and still be strongly placed.

A planet can also be of sect while facing other challenges.
