An Astrology Bounds Calculator is an astrology tool that identifies the planetary ruler of the specific degree occupied by a planet in the zodiac.

In traditional astrology, planetary bounds are unequal divisions of each zodiac sign. Every sign contains five bounds, and each bound is assigned to one of five classical planets.

These five planets are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn.

The Sun and Moon do not rule individual bounds in the Egyptian system used by this calculator, although both luminaries occupy bounds ruled by other planets.

The calculator uses your birth date to estimate the zodiac positions of the Sun, Moon, and other planets.

Your birth date is important because the planets move through the zodiac at different speeds.

Even when two people share the same Sun sign, their Suns may occupy different degrees and therefore have different bound rulers.

Step 3: Enter Your Birth Time

Enter your birth time using the Birth Time field.

Your birth time helps determine the planetary positions and the estimated positions of the twelve astrological houses.

The Moon moves through the zodiac relatively quickly, so differences in birth time may affect its calculated degree and bound ruler.

Important: The current calculator estimates local time conversion using geographic longitude rather than the selected location’s actual historical time zone. Its planetary positions and house calculations are approximate. For precise birth-chart work, especially when a planet is close to a bound boundary, compare the result with a chart calculated using a reliable astronomical ephemeris and the correct historical time-zone information.

What Are Bounds in Astrology?

Bounds are small, unequal divisions of the twelve zodiac signs used in traditional astrology.

They are also called terms, planetary terms, or planetary bounds.

Each zodiac sign covers 30 degrees of the zodiac. In the Egyptian bounds system, those 30 degrees are divided into five sections, with each section assigned to a planetary ruler.

Unlike the zodiac signs themselves, the bound sections are not all the same size.

For example, Mercury rules the section from 12 degrees to 20 degrees Aries in the Egyptian bounds system used by our calculator.

If your natal Sun is positioned at 16 degrees Aries, Mercury is the bound ruler of your Sun.

If your natal Moon is positioned at 22 degrees Aries, Mars is the bound ruler of your Moon.

The bound ruler is not necessarily the same planet that rules the entire zodiac sign.

Aries is traditionally ruled by Mars, but its individual bounds are ruled by Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn.

Consequently, a planet in Aries can have Mars as its zodiac sign ruler while having Mercury, Venus, or another planet as its bound ruler.

To identify a planet’s bound ruler, you need to know its zodiac sign and its degree within that sign.

Consider the Egyptian bounds of Aries.

Imagine that your natal Venus is positioned at 9 degrees Aries.

Since 9 degrees falls between 6 degrees and 12 degrees Aries, Venus occupies its own bound.

This placement gives Venus dignity by bound, even though Venus is traditionally considered to be in detriment in Aries.

At this degree, Venus occupies Mercury’s bound.

Degree boundary rule: Our calculator includes the starting degree of each bound and excludes its ending degree. For example, 6°00′ Aries belongs to Venus rather than Jupiter. The final section of each sign ends at 30 degrees, which is the beginning of the next zodiac sign.

However, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto still occupy specific zodiac signs and degrees.

This does not mean that Jupiter traditionally rules Uranus itself.

It means that Uranus occupies a zodiac degree assigned to Jupiter under the calculator’s Egyptian bounds table.

Applying traditional bound rulership to the outer planets is an extension of the historical technique rather than a standard component of all classical astrology systems.

2. Check the Zodiac Sign and Degree

Look at the Sign and Deg columns.

These columns show the zodiac sign occupied by the planet and its calculated degree within that sign.

For example, a planet may appear at 18.5 degrees Libra.

This position is important because bound rulership depends on the exact degree rather than the zodiac sign alone.

3. Find the Bound Ruler

The Bound Ruler column identifies the planet assigned to the degree range containing your planetary position.

For example, Jupiter rules the section from 14 degrees to 21 degrees Libra in the calculator’s Egyptian bounds table.

A planet at 18.5 degrees Libra therefore has Jupiter as its bound ruler.

You can identify a planetary bound ruler manually if you already know the planet’s zodiac sign and exact degree.

The process involves comparing the planetary degree with the relevant zodiac sign’s Egyptian bounds table.

Example: Finding the Bound Ruler of the Sun

Imagine that your natal Sun is positioned at 17 degrees Sagittarius.

First, identify Sagittarius in the Egyptian bounds table.

Its bounds are Jupiter from 0 to 12 degrees, Venus from 12 to 17 degrees, Mercury from 17 to 21 degrees, Saturn from 21 to 26 degrees, and Mars from 26 to 30 degrees.

Since the Sun is positioned at exactly 17 degrees Sagittarius, it occupies Mercury’s bound.

Mercury is therefore the bound ruler of the Sun in this example.

Example: Finding the Bound Ruler of the Moon

Imagine that your natal Moon is positioned at 24 degrees Taurus.

In the Egyptian bounds table used by our calculator, Saturn rules the section from 22 degrees to 27 degrees Taurus.

Can Two Planets Have the Same Bound Ruler?

Yes. Two or more planets can occupy bounds ruled by the same classical planet, even when they are located in different zodiac signs.

For example, the Sun at 4 degrees Aries and the Moon at 15 degrees Taurus both occupy Jupiter’s bounds under the calculator’s Egyptian system.

The Sun and Moon remain in different zodiac signs, but they share Jupiter as their bound ruler.

Traditional astrologers may consider this shared rulership when examining the relationship between planetary placements.

However, sharing a bound ruler is not the same as forming a conjunction, trine, sextile, square, or opposition.

Planetary aspects are determined by angular relationships between planetary positions, while bound rulership is determined by the individual degree sections occupied by those planets.

Can a Planet Have More Than One Bound Ruler?

Accurate planetary longitude is therefore important for identifying the correct ruler.

Yes. In traditional astrology, the Ascendant occupies a specific zodiac sign and degree, just like the planets.

Its degree therefore falls within one of the planetary bounds.

The planet ruling the Ascendant’s bound is often called the Ascendant’s bound ruler or term ruler.

For example, if the Ascendant is positioned at 15 degrees Aries, Mercury is its bound ruler under the Egyptian bounds table used by our calculator.

Traditional astrologers may examine the Ascendant’s bound ruler as an additional factor when interpreting the chart’s first house and the person’s general approach to life.

However, the Ascendant’s bound ruler is not the same as the Ascendant’s zodiac sign ruler.

In this example, Mars remains the traditional ruler of Aries, while Mercury rules the specific bound containing the Ascendant.

Calculator note: Our tool calculates an estimated Ascendant and uses it to generate the Equal House chart. However, its planetary bounds summary does not display the Ascendant’s bound ruler as a separate result.

Our calculator provides an accessible way to explore Egyptian bounds, but several technical and interpretive limitations should be considered.

Approximate Planetary Positions

The calculator uses simplified orbital calculations to estimate planetary positions.

Its results may differ from those produced by professional astrology software using a high-precision astronomical ephemeris.

This difference is especially important when a planet is close to the starting or ending degree of a bound.

Approximate Time-Zone Conversion

The calculator estimates the time-zone offset by dividing the birth location’s longitude by 15 and rounding the result to the nearest hour.

It does not apply the selected location’s actual historical civil time zone or daylight saving rules.

This can affect the calculated planetary degrees, Ascendant, and house positions.

Egyptian Bounds Only

The calculator uses the Egyptian bounds table defined in its code.

It does not provide an option to switch to Ptolemaic terms or other historical bounds arrangements.

Equal House System

The chart wheel uses the Equal House system, dividing the zodiac into twelve houses of 30 degrees each, beginning at the calculated Ascendant.

Other house systems may produce different planetary house placements.

No Complete Essential Dignity Assessment

The calculator identifies planetary bound rulers but does not calculate a full essential dignity score.

It does not combine bound dignity with domicile, exaltation, detriment, fall, triplicity, or face dignity to produce an overall planetary condition assessment.

No Future Timing Calculations

The calculator does not calculate primary directions, future planetary transits through bounds, or traditional planetary timing periods.

Its main purpose is to display natal planetary positions and their Egyptian bound rulers.
