What Is an Antiscia Calculator?
An Antiscia Calculator is an astrology tool that calculates the mirror position of each planet across the Cancer-Capricorn solstice axis.
The word antiscia is the plural form of antiscion. An antiscion is a specific point in the zodiac that mirrors the position of a planet.
Each zodiac position has one antiscion and one contra-antiscion.
An antiscion is calculated by reflecting a planet’s zodiac longitude across the solstice axis. A contra-antiscion is calculated by reflecting the same longitude across the Aries-Libra equinox axis.
These calculations create additional points that astrologers can compare with the positions of other planets.
For example, if your natal Venus is at 10 degrees of Taurus, its antiscion is at 20 degrees of Leo.
If another planet is located at approximately 20 degrees of Leo, it forms an antiscia contact with Venus.
Traditional astrologers may interpret this contact as an additional relationship between the two planets, even when they are not close together in the original birth chart.
Our Antiscia Calculator automates these calculations. Instead of finding each mirror point manually, you can generate a complete table of planetary antiscia and contra-antiscia positions using your birth information.
What Are Antiscia in Astrology?
Antiscia are zodiac positions that reflect one another across the solstice axis, which connects 0 degrees of Cancer and 0 degrees of Capricorn.
In traditional astrology, antiscia are associated with zodiac positions that correspond to equal amounts of daylight during the solar year, according to the idealized astronomical model used to explain the technique.
The concept is based on the Sun’s apparent movement through the zodiac.
As the Sun moves toward the summer solstice, daylight increases in the Northern Hemisphere. After the solstice, the length of daylight begins to decrease.
Certain zodiac positions on opposite sides of a solstice correspond to equal solar declinations. In traditional astrological geometry, these positions are treated as mirror points.
This relationship provides the foundation for calculating antiscia.
For example, the following zodiac positions are antiscia of one another:
- 10 degrees Aries and 20 degrees Virgo.
- 15 degrees Taurus and 15 degrees Leo.
- 5 degrees Gemini and 25 degrees Cancer.
- 12 degrees Libra and 18 degrees Pisces.
- 8 degrees Scorpio and 22 degrees Aquarius.
- 20 degrees Sagittarius and 10 degrees Capricorn.
These pairs follow the same mathematical reflection rule.
Every planet has an antiscion, regardless of its zodiac sign, house placement, or relationship with other planets.
An antiscion does not change the original position of a planet. Instead, it provides an additional point that can be used in astrological interpretation.
Why Are Antiscia Called Hidden Planetary Connections?
Antiscia are sometimes described as hidden connections because the planets involved may not appear close together in a conventional zodiac chart.
Imagine that your natal Mercury is located at 15 degrees of Gemini, while your natal Saturn is located at 15 degrees of Cancer.
Mercury and Saturn are separated by 30 degrees of zodiac longitude.
However, Mercury’s antiscion is located at 15 degrees of Cancer.
This means Mercury’s antiscion falls exactly on Saturn.
An astrologer using antiscia may interpret this as an additional connection between Mercury and Saturn, even though the planets do not occupy the same zodiac position.
The word hidden is a traditional interpretive description. It does not mean that a planet possesses an invisible physical force or that an antiscia contact reveals a guaranteed future event.
Antiscia are symbolic relationships within astrology, and their meanings depend on the broader birth chart.
How to Use the Antiscia Calculator
Our free online Antiscia Calculator uses your birth date, birth time, and birth location to create a natal chart with planetary mirror points.
Follow these steps to generate your antiscia report.
Step 1: Enter Your Name
Type your name into the Full Name field. This information is used to personalize the title of your antiscia chart. You can also leave this field blank.
Step 2: Select Your Birth Date
Enter your day, month, and year of birth. The calculator uses this information to estimate the planetary positions for your birth date.
Step 3: Enter Your Birth Time
Select your birth time using the 24-hour time format.
If you do not know your birth time, you can leave the default time of 12:00. However, an estimated birth time can affect your Moon position, Ascendant, and house placements.
Step 4: Choose Your Birth Location
Start typing the name of your birth city. Choose the correct city from the location search dropdown.
The calculator uses the selected location’s coordinates to calculate the chart.
Step 5: Calculate Your Antiscia Chart
Click the Calculate Antiscia button.
The tool generates a zodiac wheel, an antiscia table, planetary positions, antiscia contacts, contra-antiscia contacts, and equal-house cusps.
You can switch between the dark and light display themes using the theme button. The Reset button clears your inputs and returns the calculator to its default settings.
Important: The calculator uses approximate planetary calculations and estimates the time zone from the birth location’s longitude rather than applying the selected city’s historical civil time zone. Results may differ from charts generated with accurate historical time-zone records and professional astronomical ephemerides.
For exact birth chart work, especially when a planet is close to a sign boundary or an antiscia contact is near the permitted orb, verify the planetary positions using a precise natal chart.
Understanding Your Antiscia Calculator Results
After entering your birth information, the calculator displays several sections.
Each section provides a different way to understand your natal chart and the relationships between planetary positions.
1. Antiscia Birth Chart
The first part of your results is a circular zodiac chart that shows the original planetary positions and their mirror points.
The chart contains twelve zodiac signs, twelve equal houses, planetary symbols, and the two mirror axes used in antiscia calculations.
In the calculator’s visual chart, the main planetary symbols represent their original zodiac positions.
Purple symbols represent antiscia points. Teal symbols represent contra-antiscia points.
The dashed lines illustrate the relationships between the original planets and their calculated mirror positions.
This display makes it easier to see how a planet can occupy one part of the zodiac while its mirror point appears in another.
For example, Venus may be located in Taurus while its antiscion appears in Leo and its contra-antiscion appears in Aquarius.
These positions belong to the same original planet, but each serves a different role in astrological interpretation.
2. Antiscia Table
The Antiscia Table lists the original zodiac position of each planet alongside its antiscion and contra-antiscion.
Your report includes the following ten celestial bodies:
- Sun
- Moon
- Mercury
- Venus
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
- Uranus
- Neptune
- Pluto
Each row displays the planet’s name, its original zodiac sign and degree, its antiscia sign and degree, and its contra-antiscia sign and degree.
For example, a planet at 12 degrees of Aries has an antiscion at 18 degrees of Virgo and a contra-antiscion at 18 degrees of Pisces.
These results are mathematical mirror positions. They do not indicate that the planet has physically moved into another zodiac sign.
The antiscia table is especially useful when you want to compare mirror points with other natal planets.
3. Planetary Positions
The Planetary Positions section displays the estimated natal position of every planet.
It includes the zodiac sign, degree within that sign, and house placement.
Your original planetary positions provide the foundation for interpreting the antiscia results.
For example, if Venus represents relationship themes in an astrological reading, an antiscia contact between Venus and Saturn can be examined alongside their original signs, houses, and conventional aspects.
This approach helps you understand antiscia within the context of your complete birth chart rather than treating one mirror contact as a separate prediction.
4. Antiscia Contacts
The Antiscia Contacts section identifies planetary mirror points that fall close to the original zodiac positions of other planets.
The calculator uses a maximum orb of 1 degree and 30 minutes.
An orb is the difference in zodiac longitude between two points.
If a planet’s antiscion is within 1 degree and 30 minutes of another planet, the calculator lists the relationship as an antiscia contact.
For example, suppose your Sun is at 12 degrees of Aries and your natal Moon is at 18 degrees of Virgo.
The Sun’s antiscion is at 18 degrees of Virgo.
The Sun’s antiscion and natal Moon occupy the same zodiac degree, producing an exact antiscia contact.
In traditional astrological interpretation, this contact may be read as an additional symbolic connection between the Sun and Moon.
The calculator may show the same planetary relationship in both directions because the antiscia calculation is reciprocal.
For example, the Sun’s antiscion falling on the Moon also means the Moon’s antiscion falls on the Sun.
These two entries describe the same underlying planetary pair, not two separate relationships.
5. Contra-Antiscia Contacts
The Contra-Antiscia Contacts section identifies planets that fall close to another planet’s contra-antiscion.
The calculator applies the same maximum orb of 1 degree and 30 minutes.
Contra-antiscia are often interpreted as supplementary or reflective connections. Some traditional approaches compare their symbolic relationship to an opposition, although the interpretation varies between astrological schools.
For example, if Venus is at 10 degrees of Taurus, its contra-antiscion is at 20 degrees of Aquarius.
If Saturn is also located at 20 degrees of Aquarius, the calculator identifies an exact contra-antiscia contact between Venus and Saturn.
An astrologer may examine this relationship when considering how Venus and Saturn themes interact in the natal chart.
6. Equal-House Cusps
The final section of your calculator results lists the twelve astrological houses.
This calculator uses the Equal House system.
In this system, the first house begins at the Ascendant, and every following house begins exactly 30 degrees after the previous house cusp.
For example, if your Ascendant is at 15 degrees of Taurus, your second house begins at 15 degrees of Gemini, your third house begins at 15 degrees of Cancer, and so on.
The house positions provide additional context for understanding where your natal planets are placed.
The calculator does not display a separate house placement for every mirror point, but you can compare the antiscia positions with the listed house cusps to determine where they fall.
Antiscia Sign Pairs: Complete Zodiac Reference Table
Every zodiac sign has a corresponding antiscia sign.
The Cancer-Capricorn solstice axis divides the zodiac into mirrored pairs.
The following table shows the six unique antiscia sign pairs.
| Zodiac Sign | Antiscia Sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo |
| Taurus | Leo |
| Gemini | Cancer |
| Libra | Pisces |
| Scorpio | Aquarius |
| Sagittarius | Capricorn |
These relationships work in both directions.
For example, Aries mirrors Virgo, and Virgo mirrors Aries. The same rule applies to every other pair.
However, an antiscia calculation also changes the degree within the zodiac sign.
A planet at 5 degrees of Aries does not mirror 5 degrees of Virgo. Its antiscion is at 25 degrees of Virgo.
Similarly, a planet at 20 degrees of Taurus has its antiscion at 10 degrees of Leo.
The exact degree matters when identifying a contact between a planet’s antiscion and another natal planet.
How to Calculate Antiscia Manually
You can calculate the antiscion of a planet without using a calculator if you know its exact zodiac longitude.
The mathematical rule reflects the planet’s position across the solstice axis.
Antiscia Calculation Formula
The formula is:
Antiscia Longitude = (180° – Original Zodiac Longitude) mod 360°
The modulo operation keeps the answer within the full 360-degree zodiac.
Example: Calculate the Antiscion of Mars
Suppose your natal Mars is at 12 degrees of Aries.
Aries begins at 0 degrees of the zodiac, so the absolute longitude of Mars is 12 degrees.
Subtract 12 from 180:
180° – 12° = 168°
Virgo begins at 150 degrees of zodiac longitude.
Subtract 150 from 168:
168° – 150° = 18°
The antiscion of Mars at 12 degrees Aries is therefore 18 degrees Virgo.
You can apply this formula to any planet or zodiac position.
A Faster Method Using Zodiac Degrees
Another method is to identify the corresponding antiscia sign and subtract the original degree from 30.
For example, suppose Jupiter is located at 7 degrees of Sagittarius.
Sagittarius mirrors Capricorn.
Subtract 7 from 30:
30° – 7° = 23°
Jupiter’s antiscion is located at 23 degrees of Capricorn.
This shortcut works for positions inside a zodiac sign. For a planet at exactly 0 degrees, use the full longitude formula to avoid confusion about sign boundaries.
Our Antiscia Calculator performs these steps automatically for all ten listed planets.
What Are Contra-Antiscia in Astrology?
Contra-antiscia are zodiac positions reflected across the Aries-Libra equinox axis.
They provide a second set of mirror points that can be compared with the original planetary positions in a natal chart.
While antiscia use the Cancer-Capricorn solstice axis, contra-antiscia use the Aries-Libra equinox axis.
The contra-antiscion of a planet is always located 180 degrees away from that planet’s antiscion.
For example, if your Sun’s antiscion is at 18 degrees of Virgo, its contra-antiscion is at 18 degrees of Pisces.
The two mirror positions create an opposition across the zodiac.
However, a contra-antiscion is not simply the point opposite the original planet. It is the point opposite the planet’s antiscion.
This distinction is important when reading your calculator results.
Contra-Antiscia Zodiac Sign Pairs
The following table shows the six unique contra-antiscia sign pairs.
| Zodiac Sign | Contra-Antiscia Sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | Pisces |
| Taurus | Aquarius |
| Gemini | Capricorn |
| Cancer | Sagittarius |
| Leo | Scorpio |
| Virgo | Libra |
These pairs also work in both directions.
For example, a planet in Aries has its contra-antiscion in Pisces, while a planet in Pisces has its contra-antiscion in Aries.
How to Calculate Contra-Antiscia
The contra-antiscia formula is:
Contra-Antiscia Longitude = (360° – Original Zodiac Longitude) mod 360°
Suppose your natal Venus is at 10 degrees of Taurus.
Taurus begins at 30 degrees of zodiac longitude.
Therefore, Venus has an absolute longitude of 40 degrees.
360° – 40° = 320°
Aquarius begins at 300 degrees of zodiac longitude.
320° – 300° = 20°
The contra-antiscion of Venus at 10 degrees Taurus is 20 degrees Aquarius.
Antiscia vs. Contra-Antiscia: What Is the Difference?
Although antiscia and contra-antiscia are closely related, they are calculated using different mirror axes.
Their traditional interpretations also differ.
| Feature | Antiscia | Contra-Antiscia |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror Axis | Cancer-Capricorn | Aries-Libra |
| Reference Points | Solstice points | Equinox points |
| Example | 10° Aries mirrors 20° Virgo | 10° Aries mirrors 20° Pisces |
| Traditional Interpretation | Often treated as a hidden or supplementary conjunction | Often compared with an opposition or reflective connection |
| Calculator Contact Orb | 1°30′ | 1°30′ |
The distinction between conjunction-like and opposition-like symbolism is an interpretive convention, not a physical relationship between the planets.
Different astrological traditions may give these contacts different levels of importance.
Both methods provide additional zodiac positions that can be examined alongside ordinary natal chart aspects.
How to Interpret Antiscia Contacts in Your Birth Chart
Finding an antiscia contact is only the first step.
The next step is to understand the symbolic meaning of the planets involved and how the contact relates to the rest of your birth chart.
In astrology, planets represent different themes and functions.
For example, the Sun is associated with identity, Venus with relationships and values, Mercury with communication, and Saturn with structure and responsibility.
When the antiscion of one planet falls close to another natal planet, an astrologer may explore the relationship between their meanings.
The following interpretations are examples of traditional and modern astrological symbolism. They are not established psychological facts or reliable predictions of behavior.
Sun-Moon Antiscia: Identity and Emotional Needs
An antiscia contact between the Sun and Moon can be interpreted as an additional connection between personal identity and emotional life.
The Sun represents conscious identity, self-expression, and personal direction.
The Moon represents emotional needs, habits, and instinctive responses.
When these planets form an antiscia contact, an astrologer may examine how a person’s sense of self relates to their emotional experiences.
For example, someone with a Sun-Moon antiscia contact might use this placement as a prompt to explore whether their personal goals support their emotional needs.
The original signs, houses, and other aspects between the Sun and Moon remain important for a complete interpretation.
Sun-Saturn Antiscia: Identity and Responsibility
A Sun-Saturn antiscia contact connects the symbolism of personal identity with responsibility, boundaries, and long-term commitments.
The Sun is associated with self-expression and personal purpose.
Saturn represents discipline, structure, limitations, and the passage of time.
Astrologers may interpret this contact through themes such as balancing personal wishes with obligations or developing a stable sense of identity through experience.
For example, the contact might be considered alongside other chart placements when exploring how someone approaches responsibility, authority, or long-term personal goals.
It does not establish that a person will experience hardship, achieve success, or possess any particular personality trait.
Moon-Venus Antiscia: Emotions and Relationships
The Moon and Venus are both associated with themes of connection, comfort, and personal preference, although they represent different functions in astrology.
The Moon relates to emotional needs and familiar patterns.
Venus relates to affection, attraction, pleasure, relationships, and values.
An antiscia contact between these planets may be interpreted as a connection between emotional comfort and the way a person expresses affection.
For example, an astrologer might explore how someone balances the need for emotional security with their preferences in close relationships.
This interpretation becomes more specific when the Moon and Venus signs, houses, and conventional aspects are also considered.
Mercury-Saturn Antiscia: Communication and Structure
Mercury represents communication, learning, reasoning, and the exchange of information.
Saturn represents structure, discipline, boundaries, and responsibility.
A Mercury-Saturn antiscia contact can be interpreted through themes related to organized thinking, careful communication, or the relationship between ideas and practical limitations.
An astrologer might use this contact to explore how someone approaches planning, study, professional communication, or long-term intellectual projects.
The placement does not independently establish a person’s intelligence, communication ability, or professional potential.
Venus-Mars Antiscia: Attraction and Personal Desire
Venus and Mars are commonly examined together in astrology because they represent different aspects of attraction, desire, personal motivation, and relationship dynamics.
Venus is associated with affection, harmony, values, and pleasure.
Mars is associated with action, initiative, assertion, and desire.
An antiscia contact between Venus and Mars may be interpreted as an additional connection between what a person values and how they pursue it.
In relationship-oriented astrology, an astrologer might explore how affection and initiative interact in the person’s broader natal chart.
The contact does not guarantee romantic compatibility, sexual attraction, or any particular relationship outcome.
Venus-Saturn Antiscia: Relationships and Commitment
A Venus-Saturn antiscia contact combines the symbolism of relationships and values with the themes of stability, responsibility, and boundaries.
Astrologers may examine this relationship when discussing long-term commitments, personal expectations, financial priorities, or the role of responsibility in close relationships.
For example, someone exploring this placement might consider how they balance affection, independence, security, and practical commitments.
Other natal chart factors are needed to place the contact in context.
Mars-Jupiter Antiscia: Action and Opportunity
Mars represents initiative, motivation, competition, and the pursuit of goals.
Jupiter represents expansion, exploration, beliefs, learning, and opportunity.
An antiscia contact between Mars and Jupiter can be interpreted as a symbolic connection between action and growth.
An astrologer may explore this contact when discussing how personal ambitions relate to learning, exploration, or broader life goals.
It does not independently indicate financial success, career achievement, or favorable future events.
Jupiter-Saturn Antiscia: Expansion and Stability
Jupiter and Saturn represent contrasting but complementary themes in many astrological traditions.
Jupiter is associated with growth, possibility, and expansion.
Saturn is associated with limitations, responsibility, and structure.
When these planets form an antiscia contact, an astrologer may examine the relationship between ambition and practical constraints.
This contact can provide a useful symbolic starting point for reflecting on how someone approaches long-term plans, opportunities, and responsibilities.
How to Read Antiscia Contacts by Zodiac Sign and House
Planetary symbolism is only one part of interpreting an antiscia contact.
The zodiac signs and astrological houses provide additional context.
The Role of Zodiac Signs
A zodiac sign describes the symbolic qualities associated with a planet’s placement.
For example, if your natal Venus is at 10 degrees of Taurus, its antiscion is at 20 degrees of Leo.
If another planet falls at 20 degrees of Leo, the two planets form an exact antiscia contact.
An astrologer would examine the symbolism of both planets and their original positions.
The sign containing the antiscion helps identify the location of the mirror contact, but it does not replace the original sign of the planet.
Your Venus remains in Taurus even though its antiscion is in Leo.
This is an important distinction when interpreting the calculator results.
The Role of Astrological Houses
Astrological houses represent different areas of life within a birth chart.
For example, the second house is traditionally associated with personal resources and possessions, while the seventh house is associated with partnerships and significant one-to-one relationships.
Suppose your natal Venus is placed in the second house and its antiscion falls close to Saturn in the seventh house.
An astrologer may examine this contact when exploring the symbolic relationship between resources, values, commitments, and partnerships.
However, the house placement of a mirror point is not the same as the house placement of its original planet.
To understand the contact fully, examine the natal houses of both planets and the location of the mirror point.
Our calculator provides an equal-house cusp table to help you explore these placements.
What Does It Mean When Two Planets Have an Exact Antiscia Contact?
An exact antiscia contact occurs when one planet’s antiscion occupies the same zodiac longitude as another planet.
For example:
- Natal Sun: 12° Aries
- Sun antiscion: 18° Virgo
- Natal Moon: 18° Virgo
The Sun’s antiscion falls exactly on the Moon.
The orb is zero degrees.
Traditional astrologers may interpret this as a particularly close mirror relationship because there is no separation between the two relevant zodiac positions.
However, an exact antiscia contact is not automatically more important than every other feature in a birth chart.
The planets involved, their natal positions, their house placements, and their conventional aspects all contribute to the overall interpretation.
An exact mathematical contact also does not guarantee that a particular personality trait, relationship experience, or life event will occur.
What Is the Orb for Antiscia?
An orb is the permitted angular distance between two astrological positions when determining whether they form a contact.
Different astrologers and traditions use different orb limits for antiscia.
Some practitioners use a strict orb of one degree, while others allow slightly wider contacts.
Our Antiscia Calculator uses a maximum orb of 1 degree and 30 minutes for both antiscia and contra-antiscia contacts.
This is equal to 1.5 degrees of zodiac longitude.
For example, suppose your Sun’s antiscion is at 18 degrees of Virgo.
| Planet Position | Orb | Calculator Result |
|---|---|---|
| 18° Virgo | 0°00′ | Included |
| 18°45′ Virgo | 0°45′ | Included |
| 19°30′ Virgo | 1°30′ | Included |
| 20° Virgo | 2°00′ | Not included |
A planet that falls outside the calculator’s maximum orb will not appear in the antiscia contact list.
This does not mean the planet has no antiscion. Every planetary position has a corresponding mirror point.
It only means that the calculated mirror point is not close enough to another listed planet to meet the calculator’s contact threshold.
Can You Have Antiscia Without Any Planetary Contacts?
Yes. Every natal planet has an antiscia position, but not every birth chart contains close antiscia contacts between planets.
Your calculator may display the message:
“No antiscia contacts within orb in this chart.”
This simply means that none of the calculated planetary antiscia points falls within 1 degree and 30 minutes of another listed natal planet.
It does not mean that your birth chart is incomplete or that your planets have no meaningful relationships.
Your natal chart can still contain conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, oppositions, and other conventional astrological configurations.
You can also examine your individual antiscia positions without requiring them to form close contacts with other planets.
For example, you might compare a planet’s antiscion with your Ascendant, Midheaven, or house cusps using a separate chart.
The current calculator’s automatic contact detection focuses on the ten listed planets rather than all possible natal chart points.
Antiscia in Love and Relationship Astrology
Antiscia can also be used in relationship astrology to compare the planetary positions of two people.
This approach is sometimes called antiscia synastry.
Synastry is an astrological technique that compares two birth charts to explore symbolic relationships between their planetary placements.
In antiscia synastry, an astrologer calculates the mirror points of one person’s planets and compares them with the natal planets of the other person.
For example, suppose Person A has Venus at 10 degrees of Taurus.
The antiscion of Venus is 20 degrees of Leo.
If Person B has Mars at 20 degrees of Leo, Person A’s Venus antiscion falls exactly on Person B’s Mars.
An astrologer may examine this contact as an additional symbolic link between the two people’s relationship preferences, values, and personal motivations.
Other planetary combinations can also be examined.
Sun-Moon antiscia contacts may be considered in discussions of identity and emotional needs. Venus-Saturn contacts may be considered when exploring commitment and relationship expectations.
However, antiscia contacts do not prove that two people are soulmates, guarantee romantic attraction, or determine whether a relationship will succeed.
Relationship experiences depend on the individuals involved, their choices, circumstances, communication, and many other factors that cannot be established by an astrological chart.
Note: Our Antiscia Calculator generates one natal chart at a time. It does not automatically compare two birth charts. For a manual synastry comparison, calculate each person’s antiscia positions separately and compare the resulting zodiac degrees.
Can Antiscia Be Used in Transit Astrology?
Yes. Some astrologers examine antiscia when studying planetary transits.
A transit occurs when a planet’s current position is compared with a position in a natal chart.
In antiscia transit work, an astrologer may compare a transiting planet with a natal planet’s antiscion or compare a transiting planet’s antiscion with a natal planet.
For example, suppose your natal Venus has an antiscion at 20 degrees of Leo.
An astrologer studying transits might examine a period when Jupiter moves close to 20 degrees of Leo.
Within that astrological framework, the contact may be interpreted alongside other transits involving Venus, Jupiter, and the relevant houses.
Some astrologers also use antiscia in horary astrology, electional astrology, and other branches of traditional chart interpretation.
However, our calculator is designed to calculate natal antiscia and contra-antiscia positions.
It does not generate future transit dates or predict when a specific planet will contact your antiscia points.
You can use the antiscia table as a reference when examining a separate transit chart.
Antiscia and Traditional Astrology
Antiscia have a long history in traditional Western astrology.
The technique is based on the geometric relationship between zodiac positions on opposite sides of the solstice axis.
Traditional astrologers have used antiscia as supplementary points when examining relationships between planets.
In some approaches, an antiscia contact is treated as having symbolism similar to a conjunction, while a contra-antiscia contact is compared with an opposition.
This interpretation is one reason antiscia can reveal additional relationships that are not immediately obvious from conventional aspects alone.
However, antiscia are not identical to standard conjunctions or oppositions.
A conventional conjunction occurs when two planets occupy approximately the same zodiac longitude.
An antiscia contact occurs when the mirror point of one planet occupies approximately the same longitude as another planet.
The mathematical relationship is different, and the interpretation depends on the astrological tradition being used.
Modern astrologers may incorporate antiscia into natal chart analysis, synastry, and other techniques, while other practitioners give them little emphasis or do not use them at all.
There is no single interpretation accepted by every school of astrology.
Antiscia vs. Traditional Astrological Aspects
Conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, and oppositions describe angular relationships between planets.
Antiscia describe reflected zodiac positions.
The following table explains the basic difference.
| Astrological Connection | Angular Relationship |
|---|---|
| Conjunction | Approximately 0° |
| Sextile | Approximately 60° |
| Square | Approximately 90° |
| Trine | Approximately 120° |
| Opposition | Approximately 180° |
| Antiscia | Mirror relationship across the solstice axis |
| Contra-antiscia | Mirror relationship across the equinox axis |
The angular separation between two planets forming an antiscia contact is not always the same.
For example, planets at 10 degrees of Aries and 20 degrees of Virgo form an exact antiscia relationship, although they are separated by 160 degrees of zodiac longitude.
Planets at 15 degrees of Taurus and 15 degrees of Leo also form an exact antiscia relationship, but their angular separation is 90 degrees.
This explains why antiscia cannot be identified simply by checking whether planets are separated by a fixed number of degrees.
Their positions must be compared using the mirror-point calculation.
Why Are Antiscia Useful in a Natal Chart?
Antiscia provide an additional method for exploring relationships between planetary positions.
When you look at a standard natal chart, certain planets may appear disconnected because they do not form close conventional aspects.
An antiscia calculation can identify an additional geometric relationship between those same planets.
This can give astrologers another symbolic factor to consider when interpreting the chart.
For example, a person studying the relationship between Mercury and Saturn may find that the planets do not form a close conventional aspect but do form an exact antiscia contact.
That contact can become an additional topic for interpretation.
Antiscia are also useful for studying the geometric structure of the zodiac and understanding how solstice-based mirror relationships work.
They provide a different perspective on familiar planetary positions without changing the original natal chart.
How Accurate Is the Antiscia Calculator?
The antiscia and contra-antiscia reflection formulas are mathematically exact when applied to a given zodiac longitude.
However, the accuracy of the resulting planetary mirror points depends on the accuracy of the original planetary positions.
Our calculator estimates planetary positions using simplified orbital calculations and generates houses using the Equal House system.
It also estimates the time-zone offset by rounding the birth location’s longitude to the nearest 15-degree interval.
Although the city search retrieves a time-zone identifier, the current calculation does not use that identifier to determine the historical local time or daylight-saving rules.
Civil time zones do not always follow geographic longitude, and some locations use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets.
As a result, the assumed birth moment may differ from the actual birth moment.
This can affect the estimated planetary positions, particularly the Moon, as well as the Ascendant and house cusps.
An unknown birth time introduces further uncertainty into the Ascendant and house placements.
If you need precise results, use an accurately calculated natal chart with the correct historical time-zone information and compare its planetary longitudes with the antiscia formulas.
The calculator is useful for exploring mirror points and understanding how the technique works, but its results should be treated as approximate rather than as a professional astronomical ephemeris.
