What Is an Almuten Calculator?

An Almuten Calculator is a traditional astrology tool that identifies the planet with the highest combined essential dignity score at selected positions in a birth chart.

The word Almuten is commonly used to describe the planet that holds the greatest dignity over a particular zodiac position or a group of important astrological positions.

In traditional astrology, different planets have authority over different parts of the zodiac.

For example, Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus, and Mercury rules Gemini. However, zodiac rulership is only one form of planetary dignity.

A planet may also receive dignity through exaltation, triplicity, terms, and faces.

The Almuten calculation brings these relationships together through a numerical scoring system.

For each selected point in the birth chart, the calculator examines which planets hold dignity at its exact zodiac position.

It then adds the points received by each planet across all selected positions.

The planet with the highest total becomes the Almuten under that scoring method.

This means that your Almuten does not have to be the ruling planet of your Sun sign or Ascendant.

For example, someone with a Leo Sun may have Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, or another classical planet as their Almuten Figuris, depending on the dignity scores across the selected chart positions.

The Almuten is traditionally interpreted as a planet with an important role in the overall structure of the natal chart.

However, it should not be understood as a guaranteed indicator of personality, success, destiny, or future events.

What Is Almuten Figuris in Astrology?

Almuten Figuris is a traditional astrology term for the planet that receives the greatest combined essential dignity across a group of important birth-chart positions.

It is sometimes described as the planet holding the greatest dignity over the figure of the nativity, meaning the birth chart.

Traditional astrologers used the concept to identify a planet with a special relationship to the chart as a whole.

Unlike a calculation based on only one zodiac sign, the Almuten Figuris calculation considers several positions.

This makes it possible for a planet to become the Almuten even when it does not rule the Ascendant or the Sun sign.

For example, Mercury may receive dignity points at the Ascendant, Moon, and Lot of Fortune. Jupiter may receive points at the Sun and another important position.

The final result depends on the total score each planet receives across the selected points.

Your birth time is particularly important for calculating your Ascendant, determining the chart’s day or night classification, and estimating the Lot of Fortune.

If your exact birth time is unknown, the calculator uses 12:00 PM as the default value.

However, an assumed birth time may produce different results from a chart calculated using your actual birth time.

The calculator uses the selected location’s latitude and longitude to estimate your Ascendant and house positions.

Important: The current calculator uses an approximate longitude-based time offset instead of the birth location’s actual historical civil time zone. This can affect planetary positions, the Ascendant, the day or night classification, and the final Almuten result.

What Does the Almuten Calculator Show?

1. Your Almuten Figuris

The first section displays the planet identified as your Almuten Figuris.

The calculator highlights the planet’s name, astrological symbol, and total dignity score.

For example, if Jupiter receives the highest score, the result card displays Jupiter as your calculated Almuten.

This result represents the planet with the highest combined dignity score under the calculator’s selected method.

2. Hylegical Points Used

The next section displays the five astrological positions used in the Almuten calculation.

These are the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Lot of Fortune, and Prenatal Syzygy.

For each point, the report shows its zodiac sign and degree.

The report also displays whether the chart is classified as a day chart or a night chart.

These positions provide the foundation for the dignity scoring process.

3. Dignity Ranking

The dignity ranking table displays the seven classical planets according to their calculated scores.

The planet with the highest total appears at the top of the table.

The remaining planets are displayed in descending order of their total dignity points.

This allows you to compare how much dignity each planet holds across the five selected positions.

4. Almuten’s Dignity Breakdown

The dignity breakdown explains how the calculated Almuten received its points.

For each contributing position, the report shows the zodiac sign, score, and applicable dignity conditions.

For example, a planet might receive five points for domicile, three points for triplicity, and two points for term rulership at a particular position.

These values help explain why the planet received its total score.

5. All Planetary Scores

The All Scores table provides a detailed comparison of the seven classical planets.

It shows the points received at the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Lot of Fortune, and Syzygy positions.

The final column displays the combined score for each planet.

This section is useful when two or more planets have similar scores or when you want to understand how the calculation was performed.

6. Planetary Positions and House Cusps

The report also displays the zodiac positions and house placements of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The house cusp section shows the zodiac sign and degree associated with each of the twelve astrological houses.

The calculator uses the Equal House system for these house placements.

This means that the Sun’s zodiac position can contribute points to several different planets.

The calculator combines these points with the dignity scores from the other four selected positions.

For example, if the Moon occupies Taurus, Venus receives domicile dignity points at that position because Venus rules Taurus.

The Moon also receives exaltation points because Taurus is its traditional exaltation sign.

Additional dignity points may be assigned according to the element, term, and face of the Moon’s exact degree.

The Moon’s position can therefore contribute points to several planets.

The Lot of Fortune, also called the Part of Fortune, is a calculated point in traditional astrology.

Unlike the Sun or Moon, it is not a physical celestial body.

Traditional astrologers associated the Lot of Fortune with bodily circumstances, material resources, prosperity, and the changing conditions of everyday life.

Its zodiac position is another important component of the Almuten Figuris calculation.

For example, if the Lot of Fortune is located in Capricorn, Saturn receives domicile dignity points because Saturn traditionally rules Capricorn.

Other planets may receive additional dignity points according to the exact degree of the Lot of Fortune.

Our calculator determines its Lot of Fortune position by adding the Moon’s zodiac longitude to the Ascendant’s longitude and subtracting the Sun’s longitude.

This formula is commonly used for the daytime Lot of Fortune.

Some traditional methods reverse the Sun and Moon in the formula for nighttime charts.

The current calculator uses the same formula for both day and night charts, which may produce a different Lot of Fortune position from methods that distinguish between daytime and nighttime births.

5. Prenatal Syzygy: The Lunar Phase Before Birth

The Prenatal Syzygy is the New Moon or Full Moon that occurred before a person’s birth.

In traditional astrology, it is an important reference point used in several natal chart calculations, including some methods of determining the Almuten Figuris.

A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon have approximately the same ecliptic longitude.

A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon are approximately opposite each other in zodiac longitude.

Traditional astrologers examine the most recent relevant lunation before birth to identify the Prenatal Syzygy.

Its zodiac position is then used to determine which planets hold essential dignity at that degree.

Important: The current Almuten Calculator uses a simplified substitute for the Prenatal Syzygy. It uses the natal Sun’s position for a day chart and the natal Moon’s position for a night chart.

It does not calculate the actual New Moon or Full Moon that occurred before birth.

Therefore, the Syzygy value shown in the current report should not be treated as a verified Prenatal Syzygy position.

A complete traditional Almuten Figuris calculation requires the actual position of the preceding relevant lunation.

How Is the Almuten Figuris Calculated?

The Almuten Figuris is calculated by evaluating the essential dignities of the seven classical planets at five selected positions in the birth chart.

The classical planets are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

Each planet can receive points through several forms of essential dignity.

Our calculator uses domicile, exaltation, triplicity, terms, and faces. It also subtracts points for detriment and fall.

The calculation follows a structured process.

Step 1: Calculate the Five Important Chart Positions

The calculator first estimates the zodiac positions of the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Lot of Fortune, and its simplified Syzygy point.

Each position is expressed as a zodiac sign and degree.

For example, the Ascendant might be located at 15 degrees of Aries, while the Moon might be located at 8 degrees of Taurus.

These exact positions determine which planets receive dignity points.

Step 2: Identify the Essential Dignities

The calculator examines the traditional dignity relationships at each selected position.

A planet may receive points for ruling the sign, holding exaltation, ruling the element’s triplicity, ruling the relevant term, or ruling the appropriate face.

More than one planet may receive dignity points at the same zodiac position.

For example, Mars may receive domicile points in Aries, while the Sun receives exaltation points at the same position.

The exact degree of Aries determines which planets receive the term and face points.

Step 3: Assign Dignity Scores

The calculator assigns numerical values to the recognized dignity conditions.

The scoring method uses the following values.

The traditional positive dignity values of five, four, three, two, and one are commonly associated with dignity scoring used in classical astrology.

However, the negative values for detriment and fall are part of this calculator’s chosen scoring model. Not every historical Almuten Figuris method subtracts these values when calculating the planet with the greatest essential dignity.

Step 4: Add the Scores Across All Five Points

The calculator evaluates every classical planet at each of the five selected positions.

It then adds the points received by each planet across all five positions.

For example, Mercury may receive dignity points at the Ascendant, Moon, and Lot of Fortune.

Venus may receive points at the Sun, Moon, and another position.

Each planet’s points are added together to produce its total dignity score.

Step 5: Identify the Planet With the Highest Score

After calculating the total scores, the calculator sorts the seven classical planets from highest to lowest.

The planet with the highest total is displayed as the Almuten Figuris.

If two planets have the same highest score, the current calculator displays the planet that appears first in its predefined planet order.

This means that a tied result should be interpreted carefully. A full traditional assessment may consider additional factors or recognize that more than one planet holds equal dignity under the selected scoring method.

Essential dignity is the foundation of the Almuten Figuris calculation.

In Almuten calculation, the domicile ruler receives five points at every degree of the sign it rules.

For example, Mars receives domicile points at any position in Aries or Scorpio.

Our calculator assigns four points to the exaltation ruler of a zodiac position.

A planet can therefore receive significant dignity points at a position even when it does not rule the zodiac sign.

Triplicity: Planetary Rulership of the Four Elements

Triplicity is a traditional dignity based on the four zodiac elements.

The fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

The air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, while the water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

Traditional astrology assigns planetary rulers to each element, often distinguishing between daytime, nighttime, and participating rulers.

Our calculator assigns three points when a planet is recognized as a triplicity ruler of the element containing the selected zodiac position.

Although the calculator identifies the birth chart as day or night, its triplicity scoring function currently awards the same three points to the day, night, and participating rulers without using the chart’s day or night status to select the appropriate ruler.

As a result, its triplicity scores may differ from a traditional calculation that applies chart sect to triplicity rulership.

Terms: Planetary Rulership of Specific Zodiac Degrees

Terms, also called bounds, divide each zodiac sign into smaller sections ruled by the five classical planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

Unlike zodiac signs, which always cover 30 degrees, traditional terms have unequal lengths.

Each section has its own planetary ruler.

For example, our calculator assigns Jupiter rulership over the first six degrees of Aries and Venus rulership over the next six degrees.

The exact degree of a chart position therefore determines which planet receives term dignity.

Our calculator assigns two points to the appropriate term ruler.

Different historical astrology traditions use different term tables. Therefore, a calculation using another traditional term system may produce a different Almuten result.

Faces: Planetary Rulership of Ten-Degree Sections

Faces, also called decans, divide each zodiac sign into three sections of ten degrees each.

Each section is associated with a planetary ruler under the traditional face system.

For example, the first ten degrees of Aries are ruled by Mars in the face system used by our calculator.

The next ten degrees are ruled by the Sun, and the final ten degrees are ruled by Venus.

A planet receives one dignity point when it rules the face containing a selected zodiac position.

Although face dignity contributes fewer points than domicile or exaltation, it can influence the final result when two planets have similar total scores.

The Almuten calculation uses the seven classical planets rather than the modern rulership associations of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

This is because the traditional essential dignity system was developed before the discovery of the outer planets.

Although our calculator displays Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto in the birth chart, they do not participate in the Almuten dignity ranking.

To understand how the calculation works, imagine a birth chart in which the five selected points produce the following illustrative dignity scores.

The values below are examples of a scoring table rather than results from a specific person’s birth chart.

In this illustrative example, Venus receives the highest combined dignity score with 19 points.

Jupiter follows with 17 points, while Mercury receives 13 points.

Venus would therefore be identified as the Almuten under this example’s scoring method.

The important detail is that Venus does not need to receive the highest score at every individual position.

Its Almuten status comes from its combined dignity across the five selected points.

This explains why the Almuten may differ from the ruler of your Ascendant or the planet with the most obvious placement in your birth chart.
